In JBT55 we introduced the French hop growing region in Alsace, explaining the terroir and its unique hop varieties. Now, we have the first Japanese Hop France Ambassador. Takeshi Akuzawa, who has worked as a brewer in various breweries in Japan for over ten years, was awarded the initial bronze rank of the Hop France Ambassador program in July.
To be selected, you must actively work with French hops either as a hop grower, hop distributor, or brewer for at least five years. Other prerequisites are a visit to Alsace during harvest season for hands-on experience, and quality management at Hop France. Hop evaluation of all French varieties, knowledge of their unique aroma and brewing qualities, as well as a lecture on the French hop breeding program are also mandatory. A brewer candidate has to brew with French hops and promote them actively. A written exam is the final test.
Akuzawa has participated in the hop harvest multiple times since 2017. In Japan he has introduced French hop varieties to breweries as well as beer fans for years. Currently, he is a head brewer in charge of recipe development and quality control at Numazu Craft, Rough&Laugh Brewing, and FARCRY BREWING. He’s been brewing a wide variety of styles from classic lagers to modern dry-topped ales, showcasing French hops at their best.
“I think French hops are an optimal choice for a well-balanced recipe,” says Akuzawa. “They are appropriate for all beer styles, including German, British, American, and Belgian styles.”
